Neighborhood place. I wouldn't call this restaurant gourmet, but you find yourself going back frequently because it is both casually comfortable and the food is darn good.

My mother-in-law (aka "Grandma") invited me to Livio's for lunch. The dining room is charmingly decorated and very clean. I ordered caesar salad, broiled salmon, accompanied by a baked potato. Grandma wanted the perch. When the waitress asked how she wanted in prepared, Grandma said, "sautéed." The waitress told her "sauteed' meant "baked." Now, I am not in line to compete on Top Chef, but even I know that sautéed is pan frying. I was a bit surprised how skimpy our salads were in comparison to the size of the plate on which they were served, but I loved the garlicy, buttery home made croutons! My salmon was moist and well seasoned and Grandma's perch were well prepared. My concern for this establishment is they have a very senior customer base. My suggestion is to continue to serve up what the seniors love, but add some new menu items that will bring in a younger crowd!

Love their food and ole Italian charm decor! I have always had great friendly service. Decent price and good size portion meals. I recommend the fried calamari app. Minestrone soup and house salad is huge! Everything is fresh! :-x I only give 4 stars cause they have no CRAFT BREW on tap. Would love to see them have a local pub CRAFT BREW ..i.e. ST John MALT BROTHERS BREWERY CRAFT BREW

TOO EXPENSIVE for what it is. The chicken piccata is amazing but it's almost $20 for a large pizza that only feeds two people. Way too much money for the little food they give you.

Hello. I do not travel as much as I did since I changed jobs a few years ago. So I tend to stay close to home recently. I like this place because it is close and has a Great Bar Area. I noticed it has lost some of it's regulars. This place has the potential of being a GREAT restaurant. First they have to get a new and Modern Chef. Then Modernize the menu. And then advertise that. The food is OK but could be a lot better. It just reminds me of the older Italian restaurants from the 60s or 50s. It's in a Great location and growing area. In a fast changing world everyone needs to modernize to compete.

I have recently been at Livio's restaurant in St John. My husband and I have tried most everything on the menu. Absolutely fabulous food, drinks, service. We go once or twice a week. I give this restaurant 5 stars

You can't go wrong with this place! The service is outstanding (request Becky!) and the food is always wonderful. We like to sit in the bar area, it's a comfy atmosphere.

I once loved this place but I think the founder, Carlos Lorrenzetti, is turning over in his grave. I ordered some pork chop dish that was ineatible. The waitress took it away but never asked if I would like something else. The meal was on my bill. You just don't treat regulars this way. Last night was worse. They were out of their Livios special steak so the substituted some cheaper cut and then over charged our group of 6. Not going to be a regular any more. So sad to see them run a good place into the ground. Carlos' son needs to be around more often.

This review is about a poor experience rather than a review about the food in particular (although, its average quality in big portions). I called ahead to ask if I could pay for my parents meal as a nice surprise to them. I was told by the hostess that the waitress had to agree to it and that they would call me right back to let me know. After 40 minutes, I still had not heard back, so I called again to see if it would be OK, because I didn't want my parents to finish their meal before they took my payment info. During this call, I was then told that the waitress did agree to do it, and the hostess then took my payment information. Later on that evening I was called by "the manager", who said the waitress forgot because she was busy. I said it was disappointing especially since I had called twice to make the agreed arrangement but that it was a mistake and whatever, it's over. The manage then advised me that I should to try again, and when I replied that I would not do it again, she rudely make a smart comment and then hung up the phone on me. I guess she didn't like the fact that I rejected her half hearted attempt to make it right. Although she did attempt to make it right, I don't need to agree to do so, just because you offer it, and really don't deserve to be treated like trash just because I didn't go along with it. Of course that did't make me happy so I called back to speak to the owner about this managers rude behavior and was told he was never there (expect for some Friday nights). However, he then called and left a message an hour later, to which I never replied because I just didn't care about it this much. What caused me to write this review however is that it is now my understanding that the waitress was scolded for making the initial mistake. I and I chose Yelp to set the story straight! In summary: 1. The waitress made an error( it happens, she is human), I was disappointed, but not angry, nor wanted anything further to go on about the situation. The manger should have just apologized and said, call me directly if you would ever like to try it again and I will personally handle it. Say good night and end it. That is what she should have done, but instead she... 2. Called to say the waitress forgot and when I said I was disappointed (not angry and wanting her in trouble), but again, disappointed - she said lets try again, to which I replied that I would not try it again. she didn't like that so hung up on me in mid sentence. 3. Owner calls, doesn't get the story from me at all, but instead chose to get it from elsewhere and then scold the wrong person (the waitress) when it was the manager I was angry at for being so damn rude! (and now the owner for how he handled the whole thing). I won't ever go to this place again because I won't support an owner who treats his team like that. Or has managers in place that treat customers they way this manger treated me (just imagine how she treats the employees if the customer is a problem for her too) In the end, my parents told me the waitress was VERY friendly and very attentive to my to young sons, whom they were taking out to dinner. They told me about the great waitress BEFORE I said a word about my experience. So it seems to me that the waitress, in the end, is the only person here who should get 5 stars and should have scolded both the manager and the owner. Shame on those two because there mistakes were made on purpose, not by accident as was the waitresses!

Best chicken piccata I've ever had. It was so cool that we could control our own lighting. Prices were reasonable. It would have been a 5 star but our server wasn't in a very good mood.

My husband and I have been going to Livios for a few years. Just this past Saturday, Valentine's day we went to eat around 2 pm. From the moment we stepped in there to the moment we left, i was completely unsatisfied. I would definitely NOT recommend going there especially on the busiest day of year. The hostess had no clue what she was doing, on a day like this they need more then a teenager playing with her hair every two seconds. They were totally under staff, the waitresses could not handle more then 3 tables, they ran out of baked potatoes well thats what they told the table next to me yet i was served a half raw one. There was dirty dishes every where i mean every where and i am not exaggerating. How does a restaurant that been in business this long not be prepared for valentine's day. It took over 20 minutes just to get my one year olds grilled cheese. I felt like i was in a restaurant that just opened their doors that day, bad bad bad, if i was the owner i would be embarrassed and completely restaff or get all new management because of that experience ill never go back again because the food sure couldn't even hold its own either.

Great food at a reasonable price. Salads are huge. Entrees are huge too. Tiramisu was to die for. Diane was our server and was very pleasant and attentive. A big thumbs up here.

Once again disappointed. My husband ordered the sautéed perch with drawn butter. The butter was orange and tasted like oil. You cannot offer butter and serve oil, people are not stupid. Get back to good , quality food.

This is my favorite restaurant in the area. I recently moved to Boston and this is probably the restaurant I miss most. I wish I had a place nearby that was as comfortable and casual yet with such delicious food and fantastic service. The food is uniformly excellent. It's not anything fancy for sure, it's just good, classic Italian fare cooked perfectly with lots of flavor. Their chicken piccata is the quintessential chicken piccata to me (get the angel hair pasta as the side without red sauce so you can mix it with the lemon sauce instead). Mussels marinara are absolutely perfect, every single time. The pizza, to me, is second only to State Line in the region. Lasagna is huge and rich. I've only sat in the bar room, so I can't speak to the main area up front, but the atmosphere is so laid back and friendly. Cocktails have always been well made and wine is probably the best deal in the place. The waitresses are absolutely wonderful. My parents have become regulars here and when my Dad needed a special cooking request for a few weeks they were more than willing to accommodate. I honestly don't know what "food snob" is talking about. This place is fantastic.

Coming here feels for me a slice of Chicago's best Italian tastes of garlic and maranara sauce in the heart of St. John IN. The pasta is served with quality and keen service. There isn't a place like this for miles in this town, and I enjoy sitting inside a lively Italian restaurtant such as this one.

Great food, great service. We went here with group of four and everyone loved their meal. We started with the peppers stuffed with sausage and bruschetta. The peppers were served with a red sauce and were just spicy enough, absolutely delicious. The bruschetta was served as four pieces and was delicious as well. The garlic bread was topped with fresh tomatoes and was easy to pick up and eat. The bread was soft in the middle with a crunch crust. The linguine ala Livio had plenty of large shrimp and scallops and the garlic wine sauce was delicious. The salad was also very good and served with the best croutons I ever tasted. This is certainly a hidden treasure.

Atmosphere is quiet, and booths have their own dimmer switch, which is nice. There is a full dining room on one side of the building. The other side has a banquet seating area, with partitions if needed, and a U-shape bar. Waitstaff and bar tenders wear tuxedo shirts/pants and it's quiet. There are NO TVs in the dining area, which I love. Widescreens available in the bar, which is appropriate. Pizza and lasagna are great. Homemade Italian house dressing is *fabulous* and the warm bread is neverending and wonderful! Grilled chicken breast salad is perfect and all portions are large. Would have gotten 5 stars, but they have a strict, strange reservations policy. If you reserve a table for say 5, and 4 of you show up on time, they insist you wait in the lobby until your entire party is there. Even though the dining area was sparse and there was room for us to sit and get drinks. (A friend was late from work on the Southshore train).

This is one of Carlo Lorenzetti's restaurants and he keeps the tradition of great Italian food going! An older crowd, but a nice atmosphere and excellent food and drinks!!!

We've only just started going to Livio's, but have been very satisified with every experience. We love the crab stuffed shrimp, barbeque ribs and lasagna. They have daily specials, and if you're lucky you'll get to try the seafood lasagna and lobster bisque. Michelle is an excellent waitress, very knowledgeable and attentive. Ask for her. Dress is casual but the food is anything but.

First I'd like to start off with a comment in another review saying the decor was strange. Not strange at all if you have any clue about Italy's heritage. They have hot air balloons hanging from the ceiling. Back in the 1700-1800's The people of Italy were the first to hold hot air ballon races. Very cool! So the decor fits if you're knowledgable in any way. Now on to Livio's service. Super nice, over the top respectful & all waitresses are older ladies who know the menu frontwards & backwards. So no gum smacking space cadets. Always a plus! I've been to Livio's 4 times now & have had something different every time & NEVER was disappointed! When I go out to eat I like ordering unusual entrees but please don't over look the spaghetti! The sauce is made fresh, & is like no other! I do recommend that if you have any to take home, you ask for extra sauce. They tend to be light on the sauce so by the time you're ready to reheat your meal, the noodles have soaked up all the sauce. Now on to the prices. Cheap!!!! Dinner for 2 with drinks & appetizer always runs us about $60.00. I always, always, always get the oysters Rockefeller. One of my personal favorites. Taste is on the money but the oysters tend to be a little smaller then what I am use to but still very good. Attire is pretty casual & comfortable but if you are like me and always dress up no matter what, Livio's also has that crowd as well. I give Livio's 3 out of 5 stars. I will be a customer for life.

This place is a hidden gem. The atmosphere is unique. The food was delicious. I got the chicken florentine, it was the best chicken I've ever had from any restaurant. The end.

This review is from the perspective from a single with no kids. This is my kind of restaurant. I go for the bar atmosphere...quiet with some Frank Sinatra style music playing. The martins are delicious. I frequently order the mussels marinara which with the bread, can be a meal in itself! I recommend the stuffed shrimp as an entree. Livios is an old world place with simple dishes, and I like it that way. It's my favorite Italian restaurant in the area.

We like our neighborhood old school place. I love the hot air balloons! The staff is extremely friendly. The ladies stop by and say, Hello. There is an older gentlemen who must dine there every evening. I love how the servers take time to sit with him and chat. My husband always jokes with our servers and the ladies are good sports. We enjoy the mussels in white wine. The pizza is ok. We use to go to Lorenzetti's and Gourmet Pizza which are the sister establishments to Livio's. The booth are a comfy spot to have some wine and enjoy my husbands company.

The decor was really strange and the food was not that good. I asked the waitress if the soup was from scratch and she said it was, however it tasted like a can and was really salty! My Alfredo was not very good at all. I was really disappointed and bummed out because I love Lorenzetti's and read this was in the family. I really wanted to like this place. I did come near closing time so I'm hoping that was the reason.

Great old school Italian - Banana peppers stuffed with Italian sausage are a great way to start the meal, or the Calamari, which is good because it isn't all breading. Linguine Ala Livio is pasta with scallops and shrimp in a garlic and white wine sauce that we order all the time. Nice variety on the menu. The interior is a little quirky - seashore, but the staff is friendly, reasonably priced and consistently good.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
